Killing the Golden Goose
Bill Simmons has written a really good article about the financial state of the NBA. And to put it bluntly, things do not look good. Basically a lot teams are losing money hand over fist and the impending CBA that is coming in 2011 will effectively end the NBA. Its going to take a minor miracle to keep the league afloat under the current revenue sharing plan and it’s not likely that the players association is going to use any common sense when it comes to negotiating. The sad thing is that we are going to miss the prime years of LeBron, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo, et al. By the time they get the ship righted (cough*fire stern*cough) those prime time players could all very well be either past their prime or playing in Europe. Its a sad situation, but the NBA will probably be dead within 29 months, unless the players decide to take immediate (and large) pay cuts. Which we know isn’t going to happen.
